Francis Liu - UMHA Coach of the Year
Submitted By Karie McDougall on Wednesday, April 25, 2018
The UMHA Coach of the Year Award was established in 2013 to honour Alan Pang who passed away in December, 2012. The major criteria for this award that reflect Alan’s philosophy, skill set and his volunteer commitment include:

 - Selfless time commitment - Coaching knowledge - Technical hockey expertise - Continuous self-improvement - Community involvement

The UMHA has many wonderful coaches and it takes a very special coach to win the Coach of the Year award and live up to the high ideals that were set by Alan Pang.   This year that coach is Francis Liu.

Francis has been a long standing Coach and Volunteer with the UMHA. His 3 children Rachel, Noah & Ethan all play House League and Select. For the 2017/18 season Francis was good enough to step up and coach for 3 House League teams (Tyke/Novice, Atom & Peewee). He was also a coach for the Atom Jets and a Manager for the Peewee Jets. His dedication to the UMHA is unparalleled. When teams needed coaches Francis never hesitated to step up and help. Francis has spent an incredible amount of his time on the ice developing UMHA players. In speaking to the many coaches that have worked with Francis they all agree he is very deserving of this award.

Laura Lea, Convenor for both the Peewee and Tyke/Novice divisions this year had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Francis.  She says, "Francis is a very approachable coach who will do anything to help the league and its players. Coaches and volunteers like Francis don't come around often and deserve to be recognized for their tireless efforts. Francis always has a smile on his face, coaches and mentors players to their full potential and is always willing to lend a hand when needed. We are very lucky to have someone like Francis in our organization doing such incredible work with our players."

"Francis is an excellent candidate for the award - he has been a valuable member of several Jets teams and is a pleasure to work with.  He is always motivating the players and maintains an excellent relationship with all our kids - irrespective of their talent." states Peter Ventin.

Russ McAlpine who is also a member of the Peewee house league and Jets coaching staff had this to say about Francis.  “Francis works tirelessly as our manager. He is incredibly organized and manages all of our needs very efficiently. He is always thinking ahead and in many cases, well in advance of the requirement. He is knowledgeable and has a great rapport with the players, parents and coaches. He has a no-nonsense approach but it is well balanced by his great sense of humour. He applies this approach to everyone he deals with and is a true asset to the team.

Kevin Bowles, had the pleasure of coaching with Francis this season. Even though he seemingly coaches or manages at least 3 teams and is forever “rink hopping” with all of his kids - Francis was always front and centre at all our games and practices. Francis was firm but fair with his coaching style and used humour to always keeps things “light” in the dressing room.

On behalf of all the players you have coached and the UMHA Board of Directors congratulations on receiving the UMHA Coach of the Year award.
