Conor Johnston - UMHA Referee of the Year
Submitted By Karie McDougall on Wednesday, April 25, 2018
Being a referee in hockey isn’t always easy.  You need to be a strong communicator and patient with younger children and adult coaches.  This year’s recipient of the Referee of the Year award demonstrates many positive traits that make him the perfect referee to receive this award and the UMHA is pleased to announce that Conor Johnston is our choice for Referee of the Year, 2017/2018.

Conor who is 16 years of age, has just completed his second full year of refereeing with the UMHA.  He has been playing hockey from the age of 10 with the UMHA and played in our Jets program from Peewee to Bantam.

The UMHA is thrilled that Conor is a referee in our organization as he referees with maturity and continually exemplifies a positive attitude when on the ice.  His hockey skills, knowledge of the game and the rules and excellent skating ability make him an obvious recipient of this year’s award.

Laura Lea Upshall, Tyke/Novice and Peewee Convenor says, “Conor never shies away from having a discussion with a coach.  He always helps players, especially the younger players, on the ice making sure they are in the right positions and teaching them about offsides and icing.  Conor is very personable and approachable and has a tremendous attitude which makes him one of the best referees in the league.  Throughout the season he has helped mentor new referees and has demonstrated what a good referee looks like.  The one thing that impresses me the most about Conor is his willingness to learn and grow.  At the end of games, Conor would ask how he did and if I had any feedback.  He always had a smile on his face and was wonderful to work with (even at 7AM games!) ”.

When Conor is not refereeing, you can find him at Unionville High School where he is a Grade 11 Music Program student.  Conor plays the tuba both in ensemble and at solo venues and enjoys all forms of music.  After high school he hopes to attend College to study to become a Police Officer hopefully in York Region.  He is also a volunteer in Scouts Canada and has been awarded the Chief Scout designation.  He has been with Scouts Canada for eight years and in the Leadership program for two years.

We are lucky to have Conor with us and look forward to him continuing his role as an important referee with the UMHA.
