History & Mission (Unionville Minor Hockey Association)

PrintHistory & Mission

The UMHA is a minor hockey organization for boys and girls ages 4 to 21. Our program runs from late September to the end of March. Centered in Unionville, Ontario, our main arenas are Angus Glen Community Centre and Crosby Memorial Community Centre.

Our History

The Unionville Minor Hockey Association began back in October of 1954 with the creation of the Unionville Hockey Club (UHC). The UHC started playing that year on Wednesday nights at Crosby Arena. The minor hockey teams played their games prior to the home game for the Unionville Jets Junior C team. The Jets are older than the UMHA, having been named the Unionville Jets in November of 1950. Many of the early graduates of the UHC minor hockey program went on to play for the Jets.

The original executive of the UHC included President, Sherman Pettit; Treasurer, Art Toogood; Secretary, Glen Kennedy; Directors, Ernie Le Masurier, Bill Stewart, Herb Holdsworth, Ben Gayman, Jim MacLaren, Cam Webb, Myrl Smith, Don Strickland, Stan Stiver, and Fred Bartlett.

Over the years, the UHC became the Unionville Minor Hockey Association (UMHA). The Unionville Jets became a representative program in the OMHA at the A level for age groups from 8 years and up.

In 1990, the Ontario Hockey Federation, and other minor hockey executives decided that Markham and Unionville should become one rep centre with AAA, AA and A level teams. Initially called the Markham Thunder, players from both Markham (MMHA) and Unionville (UMHA) played together at these three rep levels.

The rep group later joined forces with our Markham Junior team, called the Waxers, and the name for all of the rep teams was changed to the Markham Unionville Waxers. The Unionville Jets then became select teams playing at all levels in the York-Simcoe loop of the OMHA. The OMHA discontinued select level hockey at novice and above, and replaced it with AE level rep hockey.

The Unionville Jets continue to form select level teams at the Mite and Tyke levels and these teams play in the York-Simcoe loop of the OMHA. Unionville Jets teams at Minor Atom and above levels play in the OMHA Select Program.

In 2010, the UMHA was certified as an Initiation Program centre by the OMHA. The Initiation Program is a progressive, learn to play teaching curriculum for players 7 years and younger set up by Hockey Canada and adopted by the OMHA in 2002. The UMHA is very proud of this honour!

Mission Statement

Our mission statement can be summed up in four words—Hockey is for kids. At the house league level our focus is on developing the skills of all players and teaching them to respect their teammates, their opponents, and the officials. This will ensure that they enjoy the sport and benefit from being part of a team.

The UMHA has over 600 players involved in its house league program. The continued success of this program is the primary goal of the UMHA and its executive members. Equitable ice time, positive reinforcement, and emphasizing the learning opportunities associated with winning and losing games are essential components of program.
