Unionville Jets help Hockey with Heart

January 15, 2015

The Unionville Jets have been proud supporters of Hockey with Heart for many years. On cold December weekends, several teams, including the Midget Senior, Minor Peewee, and Peewee Jets delivered Village Grocer bags to hundreds of homes in Unionville. These bags containing food donations for the Markham Food Bank were then picked up the next day. Thanks goes to the other Jets teams including the Initiation, Tyke MD and Bantam Jets for making food donations directly to the bins placed in our local arenas.

Way to go Jets!

Unionville Jets Win North Toronto Tournament

January 8, 2015

The Unionville Minor Peewee Jets took home the gold medal at the North Toronto Hockey tournament in a hard fought and exciting game that ended 3 to 2 over the Markham Waxers AE team.

The first game saw the Jets pitted against arch rivals - North Toronto, who the Jets had never beat. Justin Li led the way scoring the first Jet's goal followed by Alex Ventin to gain a 2-0 lead. North Toronto fought back to tie it at 2-2 setting the stage for Alex Ventin to score his second goal of the game with just 17 seconds left in the game to win 3-2.

Things would get more difficult for the Jets in the second game against the Markham Waxer AE team. The Waxers got off to a fast start scoring a mere 13 seconds into the game and despite Brandon Manuel’s goal the Jets could never muster a comeback despite many close plays and lost 4-1.

The third game was a must win and the Jets did not disappoint. With goals from Justin Li, Brandon Manuel and Adrian Yu along with stellar netminding from Rohun Pain and Jack Newburg the Jets sealed a 3-0 victory and a trip to the finals against the Markham Waxers.

The Jets roared out to a quick lead with Alex Ventin scoring in the first and then Kevin Harrison early in the second period for a 2-0 lead. The Waxers stormed back to tie the game at 2-2 until Cole Briere netted the winning goal with just over a minute left in the game for a 3-2 victory and the Championship.

Head Coach Glenn Koch praised his team for playing with respect and sportsmanship along with winning the championship. Coach Koch praised the efforts of all the Jets: Owen Burchat, Daniel Kaichis, Matthew Kanhai, Jayden Quan, Makaio Lamanna, William Gougouglias, Carlo Visconti, Lief Kolga and Matthew Trueman.

Unionville Jets Novice Select Team - Toy Mountain Drive

December 26, 2014

This year’s Unionville Novice Jets team is a team full of spirit. The players play hard, practice with gusto, and cheer wildly for each other like any great team does.

Fostered by the coaches, but largely through the players’ own initiative, the team decided to extend their sense of spirit and joy into the community by holding a toy drive at their Christmas party. The players brought in a true mountain of toys—over 50—to donate to Toy Mountain! Notice the larger-than-life tree in the photo with gifts underneath and all around, coaches and siblings and even more toys on the side! All together sharing in the joy of giving. Feels like family!

Unionville Jets Win Montreal Tournament

March 6, 2014

The Unionville Jets Bantam Select Hockey team won the Champlain Cup tournament in Montreal, Quebec over the Family Day Weekend. They were coming off the Richmond Hill Select Tournament two weeks earlier where they lost in the finals to a very strong Kitchener Jr. Rangers team.

Travelling down the 401 in a winter storm, the Jets went straight to the arena but came out flat. They managed to eke out a 1-1 tie with the Brossard Dynamos in their first game.

Saturday brought a victory over the Ajax Knights by a score of 12-0 and a close loss to the Sorel-Tracy Mariniers 3-2. This led to them advancing to the Championship Game where they played the Mariniers team again.

In the Championship Game, they faced a talented, big and fast team, but that did not faze them at all as the Jets just kept battling right until the final buzzer. They got goals from Noah Rose and Mark Bahensky to win 2-1 and bring the trophy back to Unionville.

Other goal scorers throughout the tournament were Alex Spada, Evan McKay, Austin Jiang, Michael Xu, Tyler Babin and Evan Graf.

The goalies, Kevin Attia with a shutout, and Sterling Beard who was named Tournament MVP provided strong support and played amazingly well.

Other players contributing to the victory were Kyle Lou, Adam Masellis, Michael Spada, Connor Chandran, Edwin Tam, Jack Biggerstaff, George Giantsopoulos, Christopher Glionna, and Victor You.

The team was supported by Head Coach Ken Lou and assistants Adrian Chandran and David Glionna. Congratulations boys!

Unionville Jets Novice Team hoists the Stanley Cup!

February 27, 2014

Scotiabank sponsors minor hockey teams across the country and the Unionville Jets Novice team was lucky enough to secure a sponsorship through Michael Tam, the branch manager at Markville Mall. As part of that support, the bank also has a program where they surprise teams that give back to the community by bringing the Stanley Cup to a party, practice or game.

About a month ago, the Unionville Jets Novice team participated in a tournament in Toronto. Players and parents were asked to help with a food drive at the tournament. The response was so overwhelming that the Novice Jets Head Coach, Chris MacDonald, sent a note to Scotiabank to let them know how proud he was of the team and the Unionville Jets program in general, for all the work they do in our neighbourhoods and communities.

Scotiabank responded with a note saying that they would bring the Cup, on one condition: it had to be a secret! A “pre-playoffs pizza party” was set up at Angus Glen for February 26th.

Major Atom Jets Winter Classic

February 13, 2014

Last November the Scarborough Ice Raiders invited the Unionville Major Atom Jets to participate in a “Winter Classic” game at Kew Gardens, Toronto. After a forced cancellation due to the December ice storm, the much anticipated game was held on Saturday February 1.

While north of Toronto it was snowing, in the city it was raining but nothing could dampen the spirits of the players or families! Even some of the Jets family dogs were out to enjoy the evening and watch the game. Arriving at the park, the Jets were welcomed with a bonfire, hot chocolate and a very welcoming Scarborough Ice Raiders team.

After proudly singing our National Anthem, the game got underway. As the game went on and the rain continued, the ice conditions made it challenging to skate and get the puck moving. Even that couldn’t stop this game and after 3 periods the Jets maintained their lead to win.

Thank you to the Scarborough Ice Raiders for the invitation to participate in the “Winter Classic” and for your hospitality. This event is definitely a highlight from our 2013-2014 Season!

Unionville Jets Soar at Tournaments!

The Unionville Jets have been flying high at tournaments lately! The Unionville Jets Midget Junior Team won the Amesbury/Bert Robinson Winter Classic which took place in North York January 17 to 19, 2014. Congratulations goes to all of the players and coaching staff for their success in these tournaments.

Atom Jets Help Yellow Brick House

January 4, 2014

The Major Atom Jets wanted to make a difference to those in need as part of our Christmas event. The team participated in a Secret Santa gift exchange with the gifts being collected and donated to the Yellow Brick House.

A number of families went beyond this giving, with some engaging extended family and friends to help drive the effort. This allowed us to collect and donate not only toys from the gift exchange but also a generous amount of items that are urgently needed at the Yellow Brick House.

An SUV packed full of items was delivered to the Yellow Brick House on December 15th. Thank you to all of the families that helped make a difference in the lives of people in need.

The Unionville Minor Atom Jets were hard at work on December 15th and 16th at Angus Glen Community Centre and the Crosby Community Centre selling calendars for the Hockey with Heart charity bringing in $860.45 for the Markham Food Bank.
