Overview (Unionville Minor Hockey Association)

In the Tyke division, as the UMHA is an OMHA Initiation Program certified centre, there is a strong emphasis on skills development in the weekly practices and games. There is more of an emphasis on positional play as the full ice surface and referees are used for games. The concepts of off sides and icings are also introduced in this division.

General Tyke Division Framework

  • Players are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Players are divided into three lines (A-Red, B-Blue, C-Green) based on these skills evaluations and teams are formed by a computer program so as to be as balanced as possible.
  • Teams participate in two weekly one-hour, on-ice sessions during the season. Schedules are provided at the start of the season.
  • One of the on-ice sessions is a practice. The on-ice practices rotate between skills sessions led by the UMHA’s Initiation Program Technical Director and team practices led by the team’s coaching staff.
  • There are a number of weekly practice hours for this division and each team rotates through the time slots available. The number of teams practicing together each week is based on the number of teams in the division and the ice time available.
  • Each team plays a game once a week.
  • Games are 44 minutes in length with a 2-minute buzzer to signal shift changes.
  • For each game, the schedule will indicate which line (A-Red, B-Blue or C-Green) starts and the line from which the goalie is to be taken.
  • There are a number of game times available for this division each week and each team rotates through the time slots available.
