Overview (Unionville Minor Hockey Association)


In the Atom division, the concepts of change on the fly and lines of mixed skill level are introduced.

General Atom Division Framework

  • Players are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Teams are formed by a computer program so as to be as balanced as possible using the results of these skills evaluations.
  • Teams participate in two weekly one-hour, on-ice sessions during the season. Schedules are provided at the start of the season.
  • Weekly practices are led by the team’s coaching staff.
  • There are a number of weekly practice hours for this division and each team rotates through the time slots available. Two teams practice together weekly.
  • Each team plays a game once a week.
  • Games consist of 3 ten-minute stop time periods.
  • There are no full time goalies in this division. All players are encouraged to try goaltending as part of their skills development.
  • There are a number of game times available for this division each week and each team rotates through the time slots available.
  • Power skating and skill development sessions may be scheduled from time to time in regular practice times at no additional cost.
  • The UMHA also schedules extra skills sessions from time to time which players are encouraged to attend in addition to their team practices and games. These are also provided at no additional cost.
