THE UNIONVILLE JETS SELECT PROGRAM

The Unionville Jets Select program has been an integral part of the UMHA for many years. The mission of this program is to provide added development opportunities for house league hockey players interested in upgrading their skills, and to give these players the opportunity and the enjoyment of representing their hometown in a more competitive environment. We like to think of it as an “All Stars” program.

The Unionville Jets Minor Development (Tyke MD) team plays in the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League (YSMHL) which is a part of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA).  The Unionville Jets Tyke MD program is a full season select program for seven year olds. Players who try out for and make this team do not play house league hockey.

The UMHA also offers another select program for seven year olds, being the Unionville Jets Tyke Rostered Select (Tyke RS) team. Players who try out for and make this team must also play house league hockey.

Traditionally, the UMHA has offered a Unionville Jets select program for six year olds. This team is called the Initiation Rostered Select team.  As long as the OMHA rules permit, the UMHA will continue to offer a Unionville Jets team for six year olds. Players who try out and make this team must also play house league hockey.

As there is no select program in the OMHA for teams in the Novice and above divisions, each year the UMHA asks permission from the OMHA for Unionville Jets teams at Novice and above to play in the North York Hockey League (NYHL). Permission has been granted by the OMHA annually since the 2006-2007 season.

The Unionville Jets teams at Novice and above play in the North York Hockey League. This means that these Jets teams have games scheduled in a league with all of the related advantages, such as website scheduling and standings, weekly games and league playoffs. These Jets teams also have the option of entering tournaments and setting up exhibition games in addition to league play. Rostered select teams do not play in a league. Instead they set up their own exhibition games against other teams and enter tournaments and are limited to the number of exhibition games and tournaments allowed by the OMHA rules.

There is no body checking in any level of the Unionville Jets program.
